LAMIA-käyttöopas

Älykäs monialueinen de-esser

LAMIA hallitsee sibilanssia, terävyyttä ja kapeita ylätaajuusresonansseja reaaliaikaisella analysaattorilla, enintään kolmella itsenäisellä Zonella ja valitun Zonen DELTA-kuuntelulla.

1. Introduction and Quick Start

LAMIA divides the 1–20 kHz working range into as many as three editable Zones. Each Zone is both a detector and processing region with its own settings. LAMIA supports mono and stereo instances.

  1. Insert LAMIA and play the loudest or most problematic passage.
  2. Start with Natural, then run Scan or double-click the analyzer to place a Zone.
  3. Raise SENSITIVITY until the intended events are detected, then set AMOUNT and limit the result with RANGE.
  4. Viimeistele FOCUS, WIDTH, RECOVERY and AIR. Use DELTA briefly and compare with BYPASS.

Zone 1 is present on first open, but AMOUNT and RANGE default to zero, so no reduction occurs until both permit it.

2. Modes and Zones

Käsittelytilat

Natural uses an adaptive bell-shaped reduction and is the transparent starting point for moving vocal sibilance. Split gives broader, firmer target-band control. Surgical distributes reduction across up to three concentrated peaks for whistles and narrow resonances. Mode is global; Zone settings remain intact when it changes.

Editing Zones

Double-click an empty analyzer area to create a Zone. Click a Zone to select it, drag its body to move it, drag either boundary to resize it, or use the X on its tab to delete it. No new Zone is created when all three slots are active, the click is over an existing Zone, or BYPASS is on. Zones may overlap, but should do so only for genuinely distinct problems.

3. Zone Controls

  • SENSITIVITY controls how readily events qualify. In the analyzer, drag the horizontal sensitivity line down to raise the value and up to lower it.
  • AMOUNT scales event-dependent reduction; it is not a fixed dB cut.
  • FOCUS aims and moves the Zone. WIDTH sets its span, shown as actual lower and upper frequencies.
  • RANGE limits maximum attenuation from zero to approximately 18 dB. It is a ceiling, not a constant cut.
  • RECOVERY moves from faster to slower adaptive return behavior; it is not one fixed release time.
  • AIR protects the upper portion of the Zone during reduction. It is not a high-shelf boost and adds no treble by itself.

For predictable setup, work in this order: Zone geometry, detection, depth, timing, then tonal protection. SENSITIVITY cannot produce reduction while AMOUNT or RANGE is zero.

4. SCAN, Analyzer and DELTA

Scan is a one-shot analysis that can create zero to three editable Zones and set their controls. Play a representative passage, press SCAN and keep playback running. It stops automatically, no later than about 10 seconds; press it again to cancel. If no reliable result is found, the existing layout remains unchanged.

The analyzer is independent of Zone settings and covers 1–20 kHz logarithmically. Violet shows ordinary energy, orange stronger activity and red the most severe activity. Color describes incoming energy, not gain reduction, so it can react while AMOUNT or RANGE is zero.

DELTA outputs only the material removed by the selected Zone, including that Zone’s effective contribution where Zones overlap. Use it to locate over-processing, then disable it and make the final decision in the full signal.

5. Workflows, Tips and Troubleshooting

For moving vocal sibilance, begin with one medium Zone in Natural mode. Use Split for broad repeatable harshness and Surgical for a stable whistle or ringing consonant. Two separated problems are usually better served by two focused Zones than one excessively wide Zone.

  • No reduction: confirm the Zone covers the event, BYPASS is off, and AMOUNT and RANGE are above zero; then raise SENSITIVITY.
  • Too dull: reduce AMOUNT or RANGE, narrow/reposition the Zone, increase AIR modestly, or choose Natural.
  • Events still pass: raise SENSITIVITY, check WIDTH/FOCUS, then increase AMOUNT or RANGE carefully.
  • Nervous response: slow RECOVERY or lower SENSITIVITY.
  • DELTA is quiet: select the intended Zone and make sure it is actually reducing.

6. BYPASS, Settings and Technical Reference

BYPASS disables reduction while retaining the configuration and latency-aligned dry path. LAMIA uses 2.5 ms lookahead and reports the sample-rate-dependent latency to the host. Compare at a matched perceived level.

Click the AliasingLabs logo to open Settings; click it again or press Escape to return. GUI Size choices are 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 175 and 200%. The preference is reused and does not affect audio. Parameter and Zone state are saved with the plug-in instance.
